The Burren

The Burren was under a tropical ocean over 360 million years ago, the result being the area covered with limestone, it was tectonic movement that raised an area of this ancient seabed into a magnificent plateau The Ice Age carved the rich Karst limestone plateau through the area widening the river valleys and leaving behind boulder clay.

The Burren is also famous for its plant life. Limestone-loving plants such as foxgloves and rock roses grow here along with plants found in Artic, Alpine and Mediterranean regions.


Cliffs of MoherThe Cliffs of Moher

The Magnificent Cliffs of Moher are over 300 Million years old five Miles long and are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland. They rise 120 metres (390 ft) above the Atlantic Ocean and reach their maximum height of 214 metres (702 ft).

Poulnabrone dolmen, Poll na mBrón in Irish, meaning “hole of the quern stones” is a portal tomb in the Burren, County Clare, Ireland, dating back to the Neolithic period, 4,000 BC.

 


The Aillwee Cave System

The Aillwee cave system consists of over a kilometre of passages leading into the heart of the mountain side. Its features include an underground river and a waterfall as well as some large stalactites and stalagmites. The remains of bears can also be seen inside the caves.


Leamaneh Castle

Leamaneh Castle is a ruined castle located in the townland Leamaneh North, Parish of Kilnaboy.It consists of a 15th-century tower house and a 17th-century mansion.


Kilnaboy

Kilnaboy is a medieval church of 11th-century origin.The Church includes a Sheela na Gig (medieval fertility symbol) over the door and a cross on the church gable which was once part of the procession of the True Cross of Jesus. There is a round tower nearby.
